The first Ubuntu release with a separate server edition was 5.10, in October 2005.

With the latest release, 6.06 LTS, the Ubuntu Server Edition adds support for several common configurations, bringing the ease of use that Ubuntu has become famous for on the desktop to server deployments. The new Ubuntu Server Edition provides a well-integrated platform for deploying a new server with any of the standard internet services: mail, web, DNS, file serving or database management.

A key lesson from the Debian heritage is that of security by default. The Ubuntu Server has no open ports after the installation and contains only the essential software needed to build a secure server.... more

Installing this download will give the user one password-protected folder, called “My Private Folder”. This folder will be encrypted to allow users to keep files private on otherwise shared computers.

This functionality already exists in an open-source project called TrueCrypt (with a bunch of additional features), but if you’d rather be running Microsoft software, Microsoft Private Folder is now available.... more

The international English edition just launched, but it was initially the most popular distro in Russia. It is based on Fedora Core and really does mimic Windows XP’s look and functionality well. Linux XP is also “tightly integrated” with Microsoft technologies, such as Active Directory, remote Windows server login, read/write FAT16/32 and read NTFS file-systems. Microsoft VPN can also be used with Linux XP, can your Red Hat do that? nVidia and ATI graphics drivers also play nice with Linux XP as well, with good support for OpenGL. Linux XP has an easy update feature and add-on installer to help Linux noobs get started and expand their crispy new Linux XP systems. It is an interesting distro that looks strangely familiar. Has anyone had any experience using this?Control Panel on Linux XP.... more
